The Tanzania Copyright Office (COSOTA) is under the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports and was established under the Copyright and Copyright Act No. 7 of 1999. COSOTA officially started in 2001 with two main responsibilities, the management of Copyright in the country but also the collection and distribution of royalties. Following the change in the Finance Act 2022 (Finance Act 2022), it separated those responsibilities and established private companies to collect and distribute royalties in the country (CMO), where currently the Copyright Office remains in charge of Copyright issues and issues licenses to Companies involved in collecting and assigning royalties (CMO) as well as managing issues of piracy of creative works
